We are assigned a room each. They are basic but adequate, with single iron-frame beds. Some of the fittings are falling off the wall and it takes a search to find a shower that works, but it will do. I can’t help seeing the contrast between our accommodation and that on offer at the new luxury hotel we passed on our way across from the village, but I don’t mind. The Spartan nature of the place is a pleasant change after our five-star life aboard the Albion.

As soon as Hassan has seen us settled in and made arrangements with the Mess Steward for our meals, he leaves. The Captain advises lunch and a short siesta before taking a tour around our mountaintop plateau. We have lunch in the Officers’ Mess — a delicious chicken curry with fresh fruit to follow. The Mess has a floor to ceiling window at the end which looks out down to the valley lying far below us. We sit there drinking our beer, and gazing out at the harsh mountainsides splashed here and there with the unexpected green contours of the terraced gardens which hang off the sides of the high Jebel. Even Kate is lost for words.

I want to give the Captain a kiss for bringing us to this magical place, but I am conscious of the barman watching us and so, mindful of Muslim propriety, I have to content myself with looking at him and sighing at the beauty of the view. “Captain, thank you so much for arranging this for us.”

He gives my foot a mischievous nudge under the table and winks. “Wait till we visit the Sheikh tomorrow.”

Kate turns back from the window. “I can’t wait, Captain.”

“Right, time for a snooze,” the Captain says, pulling out our chairs. We thank the barman and walk up to our cell-like rooms. Once we are in the corridor out of sight, the Captain pulls me to him and kisses me hard. “I want you to come and share my single bed, sweetheart, but I think you need a sleep after your experience in the car. So off you go!” and he gives me a push towards my door.

Of course, I’m disappointed. I was hoping to curl up with him and feel his arms around me while we dozed, but as soon as I lay my head down on the bulky pillow, I fall fast asleep.
